  • The Echoes of the Disappeared:
Rabiz Music as a Reverberation of Armenian-Azerbaijani Cohabitation

    Abstract

The following article[1] explores the potential and constraints of rabiz music and its subculture to challenge ethnic boundaries hardened by decades of ongoing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan by resonating the voices of the disappeared, in this case Azerbaijanis, in the public sphere of present-day Armenia.

I will argue that often improvised nature of these music performances and the environment spontaneously formed through it may and actually does – at least temporarily – circumvent established boundaries of the ‘national’ self and the ‘hostile’ other. In this context, I will highlight particularly the role of rabiz musicians like Hayk Ghevondyan in engaging in multi-lingual performances with non-Armenian musicians, in particular Azerbaijanis and Yezidis, as well as mugham-singing, a tradition shared and fostered by Azerbaijanis and other predominantly Muslim populations in the region.

Rabiz music, while enjoying large popularity among the often transnationally linked and mobile precarious working class made up of Armenian truck-drivers, petty traders, and migrant workers, it is viewed with suspicion and disdain by large parts of Armenia’s intelligentsia, who see in it a degenerated ‘low culture’ allegedly corrupted by non-Armenian influences from its Muslim neighbors. I will conclude with a brief discussion on how the sociolect of the rabiz subculture retains words shared with Azerbaijanis across the border and thus stands a silent remainder of a once shared past.

  • ARSEN PETROSOV “САМАЯ РОДНАЯ".
    1. Arsen petrosov wikipedia

Arsen's creative biography dates back to 1989, when he, along with the head of the family, writes lyrics and arrangements for songs.

In 1991, at the Song of the Year festival, Angelina Petrosova (Leon's daughter) presents to the public a new single called Tango on Ice. Arsen, as the author, is awarded the diploma of the laureate of the All-Union Song Festival.

Also, the songs of the Petrosovs sounded in famous TV and radio programs, such as "Morning Mail", "50/50", "Mayak". And in 1992, Arsen participated in Yuri Nikolaev's TV project "Morning Star".

In 1993, the Petrosov family moved to the United States. In New York, Arsene's father Leon creates the Leon Records studio (there is a similar studio in Tashkent), as well as a family group called Leon Petrosov's Express Band, where he and his children are soloists.

At the end of 1997, "Express Band" was invited to concerts in Los Angeles, after which the family moved to California. In the USA, Leon and Arsen released nine original albums.

In Russia, Petrosov became famous after the release of the song "Kaifuem", which, like all hits, was born in a creative tandem. Nobody made a bet on this song: neither Leon nor Arsen thought that it would "shoot". It is generally accepted that this song has become popular on the Internet. In fact, the performers have never posted their singles online.

The band released CDs and the fans did everything themselves. Fans of their creativity both in Russia and abroad published their favorite tracks on the pages of their social networks. So the musical virus called "Kaifuem" was transmitted from one person to another and became the hallmark of the band.

Despite the fact that the performers live in the United States, their music is known and loved all over the world. In an interview, Arsen admitted that they often receive letters from both Germany and the Netherlands, and from the Primorsky Territory. In them, fans admire the sincerity and simplicity of the celebrity family's creat
