Nicolae ceausescu execution video
In 1989, Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu gathered a rally in his support during anti-government protests. Four days later he was shot dead — hereʼs the story of those days (from “Babelʼs” archive)
Nicolae Ceaușescu had ruled Romania for 24 years in the 1960s — 1980s. He created his own cult of personality, proclaiming himself the “Great Leader”, and fought against any dissent with the help of the secret police “Securitate”. Trying to achieve economic independence from the USSR, Ceausescu took multiple loans from Western countries. In order to pay them off, the Romanians had to save on food, electricity, and heating. When the revolt against the regime began, Ceausescu commanded to suppress them with force. He called the protesters “hooligans who were organized by foreign intelligence services”. On December 21, Ceausescu commanded thousands of people in Bucharest to be summoned for a rally in his support. This turned into an anti-government uprising, which was supported by the army. The dictator and his wife fled from the capital but were caught, ruled under a speedy tribunal, and shot. Babel columnist Serhii Pyvovarov recalls the history of the reign and death of dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu.
Trial and Execution
"Dorin
Cârlan, sergeant, one of the eight paratroopers and one of the four that led the dictators to the wall where they were executed said:
"I was three feet behind Ceaușescu. When he saw that we were walking towards the wall,
he realized that he had no way out of this. (...) I was left with that image of...
it was something like in 'The Death of a Deer'. Then he let a tear fall, actually
several, and started saying: 'Death to the traitors!'My colleagues turned him to face
forward. But he continued to shout: 'Death to the traitors! Long live the free and independent
Socialist Republic of Romania! History will avenge me!' (...)
He then started to sing a fragment of the Internationale:
'Damned of the Earth, stand up / Prisoners of starvation,
stand...' He never got to say 'up', cause we had
already sent him up". (Grigore Cartianu, Sfârşitul Ceauşeştilor

The trial and execution of Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu were held on 25 December 1989 in Târgoviște, Romania. The trial was conducted by an Extraordinary Military Tribunal, a drumhead court-martial created at the request of a newly formed group called the National Salvation Front. Its outcome was predetermined, and it resulted in guilty verdicts and death sentences for former Romanian President and General Secretary of the Romanian Communist PartyNicolae Ceaușescu, and his wife, Elena Ceaușescu. The main charge was genocide. Romanian state television announced that Nicolae Ceaușescu had been responsible for the deaths of 60,000 people; the announcement did not make clear whether this was the number killed during the Romanian Revolution in Timișoara or throughout the 24 years of Ceaușescu's rule.
Nevertheless, the charges did not affect the trial. General Victor Stănculescu had brought with him a specially selected team of paratroopers from a crack regiment, handpicked earlier in the morning to act as a firing squad. Before the legal proceedings began, Stănculescu had already selected the spot where the execution would take place: along one s Unpublished images of the execution of Nicolae and Elena CEAUSESCU on 25 December 1989 were provided by free Romanian television.
