Mayor Jen Miles Resignation
Kingman Mayor Jen Miles has announced her resignation effective August 5, Mayor Jen Miles cites health concerns preventing her from completing the rest of this year- the balance of her term that concludes December Vice Mayor Ken Watkins will fulfill the role as mayor for the City of Kingman, and his position on council will remain open unless the council appoints someone to fill it sooner.
Mayor Jen Miles said, “It has been a privilege to serve the citizens of Kingman for almost ten years on the Council, elected as Councilor, Vice-Mayor and Mayor. I am proud of the progress made during these years and believe the City of Kingman is poised to continue a trajectory of positive growth and livability.”
Mayor Miles continued, “Much has been accomplished during this past ten years due to the hard and collaborative work of Council, city staff and our partners. I am especially glad that we have signed development agreements for the construction of Rancho Santa Fe and Kingman Crossing interchanges. As well, we have made important progress to improve and invigorate our airport, our historic downtown and our parks/trails. Importantly, our work to ensure water conservation and sustainability, while an example of excellent stewardship, must remain vigorous to ensure the long-term well-being of the city. I know that with the city's excellent Leadership Team and Council commitment, the city is in good hands to address this issue and to maintain excellent service to our residents.”
Mayor Miles finished her email with, “Thank you, Manager Foggin, for your fine leadership. I have admired your professionalism and your ability to address the myriad responsibilities of your office. I appreciate the sound and transparent implementation of our fiscal and operational policies. Of course, I would be remiss not to mention my gratitude for the on-going support, dedication and competency of our administrative offices. To my f
No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention
“We are a team, not a family… If a person on your team were to quit tomorrow, would you try to change their mind? Or would you accept their resignation, perhaps with a little relief? If the latter, you should give them a severance package now, and look for a star, someone you would fight to keep.”
Netflix’s culture is radically differentiated, at times controversial (see above quote) and so far, exceptionally successful. This is a great book that unpacks the infamous Netflix Culture Deck (circulated in ) that was described by Sheryl Sandberg (Facebook COO) as “possibly the most important document ever to come out of Silicon Valley.” Unique and seemingly counter-intuitive, it’s a culture that according to Hastings has been the foundation to the company’s success, allowing it to adapt and triumph in in the face of several sizeable industry shifts, whilst achieving some of the highest employee satisfaction scores on the market.
Netflix’s culture is one that defies conventional wisdom and stands in defiance of the bureaucracy that plagues many large businesses. They aggressively focus on building up talent density by accepting only the very best employees, removing those that don’t cut it and paying way above market salaries. They remove as many controls as possible (no vacation policy / no expense policy) and encourage a culture of radical transparency and extreme candour. It’s an exceptionally decentralised approach, which, reminiscent of David Marquet’s ‘Turn the Ship Around,’ pushes decision making as far down the ranks as possible. Great people want to work with great people, and it seems as though the culture at Netflix has created a positive flywheel that attracts and retains the best talent.
