Career
[change | change source]The All-American Rejects first became a band in 1999 when band member Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler were in high school. The name All-American Reject was made from either a mix of two suggestions, "The Rejects" and "The All Americans" or the other being that it came from a song "Reject" by Green Day and had the chorus, "your reject all-american".

The All-American Rejects (often abbreviated as AAR) are an American rock band from Stillwater, Oklahoma, formed in 1999. The band consists of lead vocalist and bassist Tyson Ritter, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Nick Wheeler, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Mike Kennerty, and drummer Chris Gaylor. Wheeler and Ritter serve as the band's songwriters; Wheeler is the primary composer and Ritter is the primary lyricist. Although Kennerty and Gaylor are not founding members, they have appeared in all of the band's music videos and on all studio releases except for the band's self-titled debut.
The group achieved mainstream success with their debut self-titled studio album The All-American Rejects, released in 2002 on the DreamWorks Records label. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and spawned the successful single "Swing, Swing". The band's second studio album Move Along brought the group further mainstream success in 2005, producing the hit singles "Dirty Little Secret", "Move Along", and "It Ends Tonight", all of which charted in the top fifteen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while Move Along was certified triple platinum in 2024 by the RIAA. Their third studio album When the World Comes Down was released in 2008 and was later certified platinum in 2024 by the RIAA. Its lead single "Gives You Hell" became The All-American Rejects' most successful song to date, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the top 5 in many other countries. "Gives You Hell" was certified 9× multi-platinum for sales of over 9 million shipments The All-American Rejects need no introduction... but we'll give you one anyway. Since forming in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in 1999, the group have released four albums, numerous hit singles such as “Swing, Swing” and “Dirty Little Secret” and toured alongside everyone from Blink-182 to Bon Jovi. Admittedly things have been relatively quiet for the band since their last full-length Kids In The Street came out in 2012, but armed with a three-song single and a new lease on the music business, their Epitaph Records debut shows that the latest chapter of the band is a natural progression in the career of an act who never broke up, never compromised, and always stayed true to their own artistic vision, regardless of what A&R executives tried to mold them into being. “We were doing things one way for so long that all of us kind of had to step away and have some different experiences both personally and professionally,” Wheeler explains, “now we feel really re-energized and ready to share these songs.” Admittedly things are a little more complicated these days for the band—bassist/vocalist Tyson Ritter, guitarists Nick Wheeler and Mike Kennerty, and drummer Chris Gaylor—as they are now living all over the country. However as they proved with 2017's Sweat EP, they're still harnessing their creativity in exciting new ways. The songs on Send Her To Heaven were all written and recorded two to three years ago with different producers, a process that was a relatively new experience for the band. “The last couple of records were fun to make but they were pretty draining, whereas I think recording this way keeps us on our toes and excited,” Kennerty explains. “We recorded each of these songs on their own and didn't think of them as a package. We just took each song and went to a different producer to see what we would come up with,” he says of the process, “Because of the way we went about it, I think we created a diverse group of songs that might not have happened i the all american rejects

hmm........ biography
While growing up in Stillwater, Oklahoma, both All-American Rejects vocalist/bassist Tyson Ritter and guitarist/programmer Nick Wheeler played guitar in junior high bands, turning to music to escape the small-town doldrums. Yet the two budding musicians didn't cross paths until Wheeler and his band performed at a party one night, where Ritter--who'd never played bass before in his life--impulsively joined them onstage as their bassist. Determined to stay in Wheeler's band, Ritter immediately purchased a bass guitar and learned to play within weeks.
Wheeler, a big Def Leppard and '80s glam-rock fan, and the AC/DC-inspired Ritter built a songwriting friendship throughout high school, and as the rest of the group disintegrated, they stuck together and played gigs around Stillwater as a duo, backing themselves with programmed drum loops on Wheeler's keyboard. The pair recorded several demos, which gave them plenty to choose from when laying down tracks in the studio with producer Tim O'Heir (Superdrag, Sebadoh) for their self-titled debut album, after the band became official with the addition of Mike Kennerty (guitar) and Chris Gaylor (drums).
The All-American Rejects released their first independent album in spring 2000, which hit the airwaves of local Oklahoma radio stations, consequently creating a massive local buzz and helping them land gigs opening for the Flaming Lips and Caroline's Spine. The following summer, they released the EP Same Girl, New Songs and toured the Midwest, returning home with a record contract with Doghouse Records (Get Up Kids, River City High). DreamWorks re-released The All-American Rejects a year later, and the album's unbelievably catchy, powerpoppy first single, "Swing Swing," immediately received nationwide radio airplay. swing swing lyrics
