College Football Hall of Fame

James Robert McMahon Jr. (born August 21, 1959) is an American former professional footballquarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 15 seasons, most notably with the Chicago Bears. McMahon played college football for the BYU Cougars, winning the Davey O'Brien Award and the Sammy Baugh Trophy as a senior. He was selected by the Bears fifth overall in the 1982 NFL draft.

McMahon achieved his greatest professional success with the 1985 Bears team that won the franchise's first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XX over the New England Patriots. He also received Pro Bowl honors during the season. However, after suffering a rotator cuff injury the following season, McMahon struggled with injuries throughout the rest of his career. Following his seven years in Chicago, McMahon played for the San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, and Green Bay Packers. He spent his final seasons in a backup role, including on the Packers team that won Super Bowl XXXI, also over the Patriots. McMahon was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1998.

Early life

McMahon was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was raised Catholic. He moved with his family to San Jose, California, when he was three. Growing up, McMahon played all sports in his neighborhood, encoura

  • It is morning, and former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon is asleep when a couple of characters named Gus Cappas and Dino Tsoros let themselves into his Northbrook home through a back door and start taking things. They have been doing this for weeks, and so far they have absconded with enough jerseys, helmets and game balls to outfit a couple of teams. Their pilferage has left many shelves and some walls of the McMahon home bare.

“We take what we want,” says Cappas.

“And what we can carry at any one time,” adds Tsoros.

On one of the rare mornings McMahon was up before noon, he encountered Cappas and Tsoros as they were ogling about a dozen framed magazine covers on a wall in the home’s library.

“What are you thinking of taking now?” McMahon asked.

“That one there would be good,” said Cappas.

He was pointing to the cover of Philly Sport magazine, shortly after McMahon was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 1990. “The Quarterback From Hell,” the headline reads.

“Some greeting, huh?” McMahon said. “But by then I was used to it.”

The devilish image perhaps will always dog McMahon, and to be sure there remains a bit of the devil in him even as he now, at 42, settles into what has long been his best position–family man–and begins a career as restaurateur and real-estate developer.

The image, though, is a big part of the package, seeded in the “Mad Mac” and “Punky QB” tags he earned when he played for the Bears from 1982 to 1989, taking the team to its only Super Bowl in 1986. He was the Day-Glo leader of a colorful cast of characters that seemed to come not from the ranks of college football but from central casting, along with such playful monikers as Sweetness, the Fridge, Danimal and Mongo.

After leaving the Bears, McMahon quarterbacked the San Diego Chargers and the Eagles, played increasingly smaller roles with the Minneso

The quoted info below comes directly out of a 1988 book by Lee Benson titled "And They Came To Pass". A year or so ago I searched and couldn't find this book in print anymore for me to refer people to so I wanted to provide some of the details surrounding the great Jim McMahon in regards to his time (not on the field) at BYU in a post. Hopefully with citation this is not considered a violation of copyright as I can't link people to this or recommend they go and buy it at an available source.... Some of it is in line with how some describe it but it also provides clarity that Jim was not actually kicked out of BYU but he was suspicious that they would so he left on his own.

My opinion - before we get started - he may have been right - but without actually following up with the standards office he didn't know for sure and it wasn't likely this was the only call the standards office made to him through out his time and none of the others resulted in him being kicked out or even being put on probation as far as I know. So what we know for "certain" is he chose to leave BYU on his own and it may give him more street cred to his bad boy (punky QB) image. And there is nothing wrong with that if that is what he was going for. I also don't necessarily accuse/condemn the school of using him and discarding him as soon as he threw his last pass like some want to state. Nobody could know that for certain - likely not even someone who sat in the compliance office at the time as the way I understand it any report has to be investigated and the individual notified of the accusation and finding with an opportunity to confess, refute, provide their own evidence, etc before actions are taken against them with the heaviest penalty of being kicked out. Pretty much only Jim would have known the certainty of his guilt, the lack of desire to make it right and stick it out, etc....

So to get started Page 103 to 116 talk about growing up, recruitment, etc.
