Elisha Nelson Manning (born January 3, 1981) is an American former professional footballquarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 16 seasons with the New York Giants. A member of the Manning family, he is the youngest son of Archie and younger brother of Peyton. Manning played college football for the Ole Miss Rebels, winning the Maxwell and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm awards as a senior. He was selected first overall in the 2004 NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers and traded to the Giants during the draft.

Manning's greatest professional success was twice leading the Giants to underdog Super Bowl victories against the New England Patriots dynasty in Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI. The former, which saw the wild card Giants defeat a Patriots team that was the first to win all 16 regular season games, is regarded as one of the greatest sports upsets of all time. Manning was named Super Bowl MVP in both championships, making him one of six players to receive the award multiple times.

As the Giants starting quarterback from 2004 to 2019, Manning holds the franchise records for passing yards, passing touchdowns, and completions. Never missing a game due to injury, he started 210 consecutive games from 2004 to 2017, the third-longest consecutive starts streak by an NFL quarterback. Manning ranks 11th all-time in passing yards and 10th in touchdowns.

    Eli Manning

    (1981-)

    Who Is Eli Manning?

One of college football's top quarterbacks at Ole Miss, Eli Manning was chosen first overall in the 2004 NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers and immediately traded to the New York Giants. Following a slow start to his NFL career, he earned accolades for guiding the Giants to wins in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI and was named to four Pro Bowl teams. Manning retired in early 2020, after 16 professional seasons.

Early Life and College Football Career

Eli Manning was born Elisha Nelson Manning IV in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 3, 1981. The third of three boys, Eli is a son of former NFL quarterback Archie Manning, and the younger brother of retired pro football quarterback, Peyton Manning.

In 2000, he enrolled at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where both his father and brother Cooper went to college. He played quarterback for the Rebels for four years and put up outstanding numbers, including 10,119 passing yards (fifth on the SEC career list), 81 touchdown passes (third on the SEC career list) and had a passer rating of 137.7 (tied for sixth on the SEC career list). During his senior year, he won several awards, including the Maxwell Award as the nation's best all-around player and the SEC Player of the Year award.

    The Move to the NFL

In 2004, six years after his brother, Peyton, entered the NFL as the Indianapolis Colts' quarterback, Manning was drafted first overall by San Diego. However, Manning had said all along that he would not play for the Chargers, and the team traded him on draft day to the New York Giants.

Manning had a rocky rookie year and was benched at one point in favor of veteran Kurt Warner. However, Warner soon retired, and in 2005, Manning was named the Giants' starter once again. Under the Giants' new head coach, Tom Coughlin, Manning led the team to average results over the next three seasons, compiling a 25-23 record with two playoff appearances—both losses.

Early Years and University of Tennessee

Peyton Williams Manning was born March 24, 1976, in New Orleans. The second of three boys, Peyton is a son of former NFL quarterback Archie Manning and the older brother of another longtime NFL QB Eli Manning.

Stoked by a competitive fire that surpassed even that of his two brothers, Peyton seemed destined to be a great quarterback almost from the time he could pick up a football. At Isidore Newman High School, Manning led the football team to a 34-5 record, throwing for more than 7,000 yards, and was largely viewed as the nation's No. 1 football recruit in his senior season.

Manning enrolled at the University of Tennessee in 1994, where his dominance continued. Over his four-year career, Manning torched opponents with a big arm and dead-on accuracy, setting an astounding 42 conference, school and NCAA records. In all, he passed for 11,201 yards, registered 863 completions and connected for 89 touchdowns. In addition to his physical gifts, the 6-foot-5-inch, 230-pound Manning developed a reputation as a voracious student of the game.

    Joining the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts

In 1998, the Indianapolis Colts selected Manning with the first overall pick in the NFL draft. For a franchise saddled with a recent record of hard luck and plenty of losses, Manning was quickly embraced as a savior.

His rookie year, however, was far from perfect. Moments of brillia
