Vasco da Gama Regatta Club Foundation

On August 21, 1898, 62 idealists, Brazilians and Portuguese who were part of the Portuguese colony in the city of Rio de Janeiro, organized a meeting in a hall in Rua da Saúde, n. 293 (today, Rua Sacadura Cabral, n. 345).293 (today, Rua Sacadura Cabral, 345) with the aim of founding a rowing club. Inspired by the celebrations of the IV Centenary of the Discovery of the Maritime Route to the Indies, the founders named the new club after the Portuguese man who had achieved the feat of "discovery". The trajectory of the Vasco da Gama Regatta Club in the state of Rio de Janeiro was born.

The first of many triumphs

Together with the União de Regatas, Vasco was inaugurated in official championships on June 4, 1899, in the Botafogo neighborhood. Dressed in a black uniform with a white diagonal stripe and a high cross in the center, the Vasco da Gama rowers achieved the rowing club's first victory in a sporting competition. It was in the first race, in the junior category, with the boat "Volúvel", driven by six oars.

A black club

In 1904, Vasco began its revolutionary journey. For the first time in the history of sports clubs in Brazil, a non-white was elected president. After the elections, the Vascaíns were the masters of honor at a time when racism routinely tainted sport. That year, Vasco da Gama led the black Cândido José de Araújo to the highest level of the club: the presidency. Candinho, as he was known, presided over Vasco in his first term, from August 1904 to August 1905. Following his change of heart, he was re-elected and remained in office until August 1906. It was during his term that the club became champions for the first time in a rowing championship in its history.

Vasco da Gama is a South African football club based in the Parow suburb of the city of Cape Town. Coming from the lower ranks, the club had its roots entrenched in the local Portuguese South African community, and adopted its name, crest and team colours from the Brazilian club Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama. In 2016, the club sold its National First Division (NFD) franchise and a new club was formed, Stellenbosch F.C.

    History

Being mainly a lower league club, Vasco won promotion to the National First Division in 2003, after being crowned champions of the Vodacom Second Division. In their first season of first division football they finished 5th, giving themselves the opportunity to build on their previous league performances.

After a successful 2005/2006 season, Vasco featured in the promotion playoffs, beating Bush Bucks in the semi-final. They lost 1–0 in the playoff finals to a Benoni Premier United team, which included Bafana Bafana players Bernard Parker and Tsepo Masilela. In 2008 they won the Vodacom League and regained promotion into the National First Division once again.

Vasco secured promotion to the Premiership when they beat Black Leopards 2–1 (aggregate score 3–2) in a promotional play-off at Parow Park on 7 March 2010.

After only one season in the Premiership Vasco was relegated finishing 15th on the log and losing the promotion/relegation playoffs.
