Kate Middleton’s 43rd Birthday Post From Prince William Points to a Key Change in Their Marriage
After Kate Middleton spent most of last year receiving cancer treatment away from the spotlight, Prince William kicked off 2025 with a public birthday post as his wife turned 43 on January 9. The royal family has begun shifting away their usual formal social media presence amid Kate’s illness, and William did just that with his candid tribute and casual image of the princess he paired with a heartfelt message. According to a royal expert, William’s birthday tribute–a stark contrast to the more traditional tributes of the past–demonstrates a key change in his personal relationship with Kate and a new era for the royal family.
Traditionally, the royal family rarely acknowledges birthdays on social media unless they’re milestones, like the unexpected birthday message the Prince and Princess of Wales's official accounts penned for Prince Harry’s 40th last year. Similarly, the couple’s last birthday post for Kate was for her 40th in 2022: A sepia-toned official portrait from the National Portrait Gallery that showed her wearing a white, off-the-shoulder chiffon ball gown with her sapphire and diamond engagement ring–which belonged to the late Princess Diana–front and center.
In contrast, William’s birthday post for Kate this year couldn’t have been more different. In a photo taken by photographer Matt Porteous at Windsor last summer, the princess showed her continued penchant for “country chic” attire, pairing a dark blazer with cuffed sleeves with a white button-up top, dark jeans, and a plaid scarf. In a sweet note signed from “W,” William wrote, "To the most incredible wife and mother. The strength you’ve shown over the last year has been remarkable. George, Charlotte, Louis and I are so proud of you. Happy Birthday, Catherine. We love you.”
According to The Sun, royal expert Hugo Vickers explained that "the tribute demonstrates solidarity in marriage Heir apparent to the British throne (born 1982) "Prince William" and "Prince William of the United Kingdom" redirect here. William's wife Princess Kate celebrated his birthday on June 21 by sharing a photo of the future king jumping in the air with their three children, Princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte, on a beach in Norfolk, England. The photo was taken last month by Kate, according to Kensington Palace. The palace shared the photo on social media Friday accompanied by a caption written by Kate, who wrote, "Happy birthday Papa, we all love you so much! That photo showed William and his three kids with their arms around each other looking out at the ocean. The social media post was signed by George, 10, Charlotte, 9, and Louis, 6, who wrote, "We love you, Papa. Happy Father's Day G, C & L." The three children joined their parents on June 15 at Trooping the Colour, marking the first official public appearance for the siblings since December. The palace has not said what type of cancer Kate was diagnosed with. In the first update on her health, Kate said on June 14 that she is "making good progress" as she undergoes chemotherapy but is not "out of the woods yet." It’s an unusually personal message from the prince, but one that chimes with the Waleses’ newfound candor following the princess’s cancer diagnosis and recovery over the course of 2024. When, in June, Kate announced that she would be attending Trooping the Colour, she followed the official Kensington Palace announcement with an intimate letter about her journey through treatment and a photograph of herself beneath a willow tree near her Windsor home of Adelaide Cottage. “As anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good and bad days,” she wrote. “On those bad days, you feel weak, tired, and you have to give into your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.” For the princess, making the most of feeling well meant appearances at some of her favorite events, including Wimbledon (Kate is the royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club), but primarily involved being with her husband and children in the countryside, far away from the fishbowl of Kensington Gardens. When she confirmed she had completed her cancer treatment in September, she did so with an uncharacteristically candid video message filmed on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. So, what will 2025 hold for the Waleses? For the princess, something closer to business as usual, with Kate expected to make appearances at most of the major events in the royal calendar, from Royal William, Prince of Wales
