  • Once in a blue moon Penders will say something valid–for example, when he brings up how Archie and most American comic publishers don’t treat their creators right or pay them enough. And yes, people do have a tendency to disagree with him just because they already dislike him. In my experience, whenever I share Penders’ side of any behind the scenes story, people also have a tendency to believe he’s lying, even if it’s something he has no reason to be lying about

I don’t think the Uekawa cover comments are a good example of this, though. You’re allowed to express your dislike for the cover because you’re just some rando. Penders publicly calling it “lazy” as a seasoned industry professional, on the other hand, is an incredibly shitty thing to do. Especially for a cover that was perfectly fine. It’s a little simple, yes, but intentionally simple for the sake of style

Like, that’s just not something you do as a professional. You can be critical of your peers’ work, but to just flat out call them “lazy artists” is a dick move. Like as an indie dev, I’m fine criticizing other peoples’ games, but calling them “lazy” isn’t criticism. It’s an insult. Even if you don’t like someone’s work, you have no idea how hard they did or didn’t work on it. And honestly, most of the time? People are working overtime, if not practically working themselves to death, to make the media you consume

The Chaos Project: Sonic the Hedgehog

About 90% of this episode was written using a smartphone. I don’t recommend it, but it was good for a pinch. It was done more out of necessity than choice. Since I was spending my nights at the computer working on Zero’s shiny new artwork, the only free time I had available to write was during my off hours at work, where no computer was available. So technically, I was actually getting paid to work on my passion project. So in that sense, 10 out of 10, would definitely recommend. Anyways, I could’ve simply waited until the artwork was done, but it wasn’t long before I decided I would make it my mission to publish the episode on the release date of Sonic Colors Ultimate. Should’ve been paying more attention to that, because I was thinking that was going to be Friday the 10th, not Tuesday the 7th. The result was a crunched and stressful 24 hours trying to coordinate things with Yuni Oha to just barely get everything out at 10 pm on the planned date. That also gives this episode the shortest turnover ever from completion to publication—I usually allow myself a week at minimum before proofreading as a precautionary measure, also allowing me the time to consider any additional edits I want to make.

So why did I want to release it on Sonic Colors day, even though it has nothing to do with Sonic Colors? Honestly, it was mostly just because I figured the Sonic corner of fanfiction.net would probably be receiving above average attention on that day, so I might as well take advantage of the potential increase in stats. But of course, there’s also the fact that I called attention to in the Episode Update post. As a writer invested in the lore of the Sonic universe, Sonic Colors is pretty much the bane of my existence, and I didn’t want to pass up the chance to diss on it by showing the world what a real Sonic story should look like. Of course, the option was available to me to write an a

I want to create products that people who see them will find enjoyable.

Let’s start with the first Creators Interview, Uekawa Yuuji. We are pleased to have you.

    Hello. Thanks for having me.

First of all, can you tell us how and why you joined SEGA?

    Sure.
Well, this may not be an exemplary answer, but I have hardly played games since I was a student…
My interest in this industry came from a larger entertainment aspect.

Big entertainment… could you be a little more specific?

To be more specific, I want to create products that are enjoyable for both adults and children.
For example, illustrations, plushies, and toys with characters for children are fun just to look at, aren’t they?
It has been my dream since I was a child to draw pictures of such characters and worlds.

So you chose SEGA as the stage to make your dream come true. What was your impression of SEGA?

I chose SEGA because I had a strong impression of it as a place that creates new things, whether it is technology, services, or content.

The deciding factor for me was when I attended a SEGA briefing as part of my job hunting activities, and when asked if SEGA was going to create a mascot character, they responded that they are currently creating an action game using the character and will be developing it more and more.

Then I was like, “Whoa?!” (laughs).

At that time, home hardware was beginning to spread and games were becoming popular at a tremendous pace.
I was sure that the need for characters would expand greatly through this medium.

And that’s how you met Sonic.

    I guess Sonic’s popularity really was inspiring…

Nowadays, Japanese comics and animations are gaining popularity and recogniti
