Singanalluru Puttaswamaiah Muthuraj (24 April 1929 – 12 April 2006), better known by his stage name Dr. Rajkumar, was an Indian actor and singer who worked in Kannada cinema. Regarded as one of the greatest and versatile actors in the history of Indian cinema, he is considered a cultural icon and holds a matinée idol status in the Kannada diaspora, among whom he is popularly called as Nata Saarvabhouma (Emperor of Actors), Bangarada Manushya (Man of Gold), Vara Nata (Gifted actor), Gaana Gandharva (Celestial singer), Rasikara Raja (King of connoisseurs), Kannada Kanteerava and Rajanna/Annavru (Elder brother, Raj). He was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 1983 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1995. He is the only lead actor to win National Award for Playback singing. His 39 movies have been remade 63 times in 9 languages by 34 actors making him the first actor whose movies were remade more than fifty times and the first actor whose movies were remade in nine languages.   • BENGALURU: The Karnataka government is contemplating to teach the life story of late Kannada superstar Puneeth Rajkumar in schools to encourage philanthropic activities among children.

    Education Minister B.C Nagesh has responded positively to the demand of thousands of people and organisations in this regard. He assured that a decision would be taken in this regard after discussing the matter with the government.

    Puneeth won a national award and became a superstar at a very young age. He also undertook a lot of social service and had become a model for other celebrities.

    Many philanthropic organisations and people had written to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Education department urging the government to include a chapter on Puneeth's life in the textbook of 4th or 5th grade students.

    The actor had been running 26 orphanages, 19 goshalas, 16 old-age homes and supported over 4,800 children from the economically weaker sections.

    Bengaluru South District BJP President N.R. Ramesh had also written to the Education Minister, demanding inclusion of Puneeth's life history in the school syllabus.

    The BBMP officers had brought the matter to the notice of Nagesh, who has responded positively.

    After suffering a massive heart attack, Puneeth died on October 29 last year. He is survived by his wife Ashwini Puneeth Rajkumar and two daughters. His last movie 'James' was released on March 17 which received a fantastic opening at the box office.

    The entire film fraternity and people from across the country appreciated the philanthropic activities of the late actor which came to light only after his death.

    Puneeth Rajkumar dies: Actor had donated his eyes, security beefed up across Karnataka

    Popular Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar, son of Kannada cinema legend Rajkumar, passed away at the age of 46 following a massive heart attack on Friday. Consequently, security has been beefed up across Karnataka. The Hospital said in a statement, "Puneeth Rajkumar was brought to Vikram Hospital today with diagnosis of heart attack with ECG done by a family doctor. At the time of arrival to the emergency, the patient was non-responsive and was in cardiac asystole. Immediate adv cardiac life support measures were initiated for resuscitation. In spite of prolonged advanced &aggressive measures,patient continued to be non-responsive& asystolic. Panel of medical experts extended all efforts to save him. He was declared dead at 2.30pm."

    Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar, and former Union minister S.M. Krishna expressed their condolences on the untimely death of Puneeth.

    According to family sources, Puneeth suffered a heart attack while working out at a gym. Immediately he was shifted to Vikram Hospital. Dr Ranganath Nayak stated that his condition was critical when he was brought to the hospital. But the efforts of doctors to revive him went in vain.

    Puneeth's health worsened on Thursday evening but he did not visit a doctor. He went to the gym in the morning and developed chest pain. He was taken to a private clinic where ECG was done. During check up, his condition worsened and he was rushed to Vikram Hospital, where he succumbed to cardiac arrest.

    Puneeth had donated his eyes. He is survived by wife Ashwini and daughters Vanditha and Dhruthi.

    Security has been beefed up all across the state including state capital Bengaluru to manage the situation. The Kannada film industry has come to a grinding halt and all movie shows have been cancelled in the state.
