'Mahabharat' star Nitish Bhardwaj files FIR against ex-wife, says he was debarred from seeing kids

‘Mahabharat’ star Nitish Bharadwaj is now embroiled in an ugly legal spat with his wife.

The actor filed a police complaint against his wife Smita Gate, claiming that he was a victim of mental tortureand harassment. According to a report by the Free Press Journal, the actor approached the Bhopal Police Commission on Wednesday.

According to the report, Gate stopped him from meeting his twin daughters Devyani and Shivranjani. He also claimed that his wife had changed his daughter’s schools so as to hinder him from meeting them and this act had a devastating impact on his mental health.

In an interview with the Times Of India, the actor said that having a divorcecan be as painful as an amputated limb and this can impact the children and their mental health. “All I can say is that sometimes divorce can be more painful than death as you live with an amputated core. It’s the children who suffer the most when a family breaks down. So, the onus is on the parents to ensure that there’s minimum collateral damage that their children have to go through,” he told the publication.

Gate is an IAS officer. She works as an Additional Chief Secretary at the MP Human Rights Commission. The duo tied the knot in 2009 and separated in 2019.

Bhardwaj is best known for essaying the role of Lord Krishna in the iconic TV series ‘Mahabharata’. Directed by BR Chopra, the series remains the most popular adaptation of the Hindu epic. He has also appeared in TV shows and films such as ‘Mohenjo Daro’, ‘Kedarnath’ etc.

Nitish Bharadwaj: Relevance of Lord Krishna is timeless

Recalling his initiation into deification Nitish who played Krishna several times over in different serials, says, “After Mahabharat was telecast I was suddenly in the votex of this immense veneration. My Brahminical upbringing did not permit me to approve of this deification. I was taught to remain grounded, close to my roots … and here I was being raised to the skies! It was disorienting. But over the year I’ve accepted that Lord Krishna has himself chosen me to be his face voice and messenger on earth. I accept that huge responsibility very humbly.’

Recollecting his wonderful association with B R Chopra and his son Ravi Chopra during and after the making of Mahabharat , Nitish says, “So many memories… my first audition in 1986. I looked horrible with a moustache. In 1987 when I started playing the lead in Marathi and Hindi films the mouche went. But during my audition for Mahabharat I felt I didn’t have a chance. In fact I was chosen not to play Krishna, but to play Vidhur. For Krishna B.R Chopra saab had another senior actor in mind. But then Vidhur’s role was taken from me. And then there was re-think on Krishna’s casting. The entire team decided they needed someone younger. And B R Chopra Saab’s son my dear friend Ravi Chopra stood up for me. I was eternally indebted to him .We not only did Mahabharat but also Vishnu Puran later. When I turned director with the Marathi film Pitruroon I went to see Ravi who was on his death bed for his best wishes. He always believed in me and in fact during Mahabharat I’d sometime set up the shot for him in the morning before he arrived at 9 am.”

Actor Nitish Bharadwaj, who portrayed the iconic role of Lord Krishna in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat is elated that the show is coming back on the small screen but also shares his apprehensions.

As BR Chopra’s mythological series, Mahabharat, is having a successful re-run on the small screen amid the ongoing lockdown, actor Nitish Bharadwaj, who took on the “colossal task of portraying Lord Krishna” in the show, has an interesting take on whether this could be a unifying element in a house with viewers from different generations.

“The new generation, the millennials, have seen much better visual effects and grandeur from Hollywood in the last 20 years. So they may compare the basic VFX of Mahabharat to today’s Hollywood. But it is upto the older generations to tell them beforehand that in the 1980’s, India didn’t have any technology at all and yet the Chopras managed to give some VFX for the time,” Bharadwaj tells us.

What he, however, hopes is the youth focusses on the fine dialogues written by Rahi Masoom Raza. “They are relevant to all aspects of human strife, for all times to come... They’ll help them to understand complexities of human relations and understand how to face life. The youth is lucky that such an exceptional serial is being broadcast again and this is their chance to understand Krishna’s immortal philosophy of the Gita,” he adds.

Recounting how the show gave him “overnight stardom along with an overwhelming responsibility”, Bharadwaj says Chopra had told him that the ambitious serial would collapse if his portrayal of Krishna failed. But he remembers, “The most nostalgic moment for me was when BR Uncle told me that he had become my fan. Another moment was when Rahi saheb complimented me saying, ‘When I hear you speak the dialogues written by me, I believe people
